First farmers market

10 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
After months of planning Gloucester’s first Farmers Market is on this Saturday, February 13 at Billabong Park.

And while Farmers Markets are now a feature in many communities around the state, Gloucester’s market will have a unique drawcard, a community stall, to give backyard growers and smaller producers a chance to get into the marketing system.

And some of that produce will come from Gloucester’s Tucker Patch, Gloucester’s demonstration garden.

Established by The Gloucester Project the garden is showing how to turn poor soil into a productive garden and grow a range of produce.

Marnie Johnson has been actively involved in helping set up the Farmers Market and said the market will help establish Gloucester’s reputation as a food producer.

More than 20 stall holders have signed up for the first market with local produce ranging from goats milk soap to wine, honey, flowers, plants, vegetable, beef and bread all available at the markets.

Marnie said the community stall will be officially opened at 11am Saturday.

The Farmers Market will be open between 8.30am and 12.30pm on Saturday and will be held on the second Saturday morning each month at Billabong Park.
