During the January school holidays, while many of their school mates were lazing by the beach or lounging in front of the TV, a group of students from Gloucester High School spent two weeks trekking through the rugged wilds of Tasmania.
The party of six students were completing their major assessment expedition for the Gold Level of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Accompanied by expedition supervisors Kevin and Sharon Costa, the students completed the Overland Track through the Central Highlands of Tasmania, climbing a number of major mountains along the way – including Tasmania’s highest peak, Mt Ossa.
Prepared for all conditions the group were exposed to typical Tasmanian weather, ranging from cold winds and rain to searing heat and back again. Not content to complete the Overland track the “standard way” the group continued along an additional two day section – taking the total distance to well over 100km. With packs weighing in excess of 20 kilograms this was an incredible achievement.
This has been a life-changing experience for all involved and only came about as a result of the support of parents and families of the students, as well as through sponsorship from a number of businesses and organisations in the community – all of whom the students wish to sincerely thank.
The attainment of a Gold Level Duke of Edinburgh Award is a major achievement and represents a significant long-term commitment by these students who have now been involved in the program for over three years. During this time they have completed numerous multi-day expeditions, contributed to the wider community through their Community Service work and been actively involved in a range of sporting and cultural activities.
Congratulations to these students and the best of luck as they complete the final stages of their awards.
