While the records tumbled in the bike leg of the Gloucester High School tri challenge last Friday, the low water level in the Barrington River stopped the event front-runners from setting a new overall record in the 18th annual event.
First across the line was guest competitor and former Gloucester High School student Jason English, but the title of tri-challenge winner for 2009 went to Port Macquarie competitor Billy Sewell who was just one second in front of local Nick Ellis.
Ellis crossed Rocky Crossing just in front of Sewell, but Sewell crossed the finish line first after a sprint from the river’s edge.
Sewell finished the event in 1:12:43, Nick Ellis in 1:12:44. Will Butler crossed the line in third place in 1:19:06.
The event record is 1 hour 8 minutes.
The first individual female across the line was Tamika Preston in a time of 1:27:50, Kate Kingston came in second in 1:30:58.
The first team over the line was Rick Williams, Alex Bratfield and Hannah West with a time of 1:25:59.
This year, 63 competitors lined up for the event, 44 of the completing the 9km bike ride, 4km kayak and 4km run as individual entrants.
