THE Gloucester Magpies will take on Thornton-Beresfield in the opening week of the Newcastle Hunter Rugby League D grade competition this Saturday.
The Magpies were narrowly beaten 37-34 by West Maitland in their final regular season clash of the year, but will still finish third on the ladder despite losing their last two matches.
In a see-sawing affair, West Maitland sprung out to a 12-nil lead, before a try to prop Mathew Higgins under the posts saw the Magpies peg one back.
Centre Scott Wratten levelled the scores soon after, but two tries to West Maitland saw them take a 20-18 advantage into the sheds at half time. Tries to Wratten and centre partner Luke Allardice in the second half were not enough to salvage the match for the Magpies as West Maitland took the win.
Todd Ritter took the three points for the Magpies, with Wratten securing two and Allardice one. Wratten was named player’s player.
This Saturday the third-placed Magpies travel to Raymond Terrace where they will meet Thornton Beresfield for a spot in the major semi final.
Kick off is at 10am. Should the Magpies win they will play Carrington for a place in the grand final. The loser of this Saturday’s match will take on the winner of the clash between Williamtown and Karuah.
