PETER Green’s letter (Gloucester Advocate, December 18) makes a sudden and unaccountable leap between two very distinct topics.

It is only the second of these I want to address. The writer uses one example only to accuse Julie Lyford of ‘wanting to protest against anything progressive.’
Peter Green takes personal aim at Mrs Lyford, so I believe her defence needs also to be particular and personal.
Julie Lyford has been and is an unselfish and inspirational leader in our community.
Her service on Gloucester Shire Council spanned 16 years. During her year as our mayor, Julie made herself available at all times - often at personal cost.
Julie began the Environment Group and with Robyn Dugas and Steve Robinson initiated the lung function testing.
Both GACCI and the Shakespeare Festival have seen Julie as a ‘visionary and a stalwart’ on their committees.
She was the convenor of the Women’s Gathering and is on the committee of the Gloucester Project and Tucker Patch.
Julie is a member of the Upper Hunter Arts Society, the local arts society and has been on the board of Upper Hunter Regional Development.
Service is the hallmark of Julie Lyford’s activities yet she is accused of being against ‘anything progressive’.
I challenge anyone to find a person more committed to the welfare of the Gloucester district.
It is high time we presented such local heroes with bouquets instead of throwing brickbats.
