The Magpies started sluggishly in front of a healthy crowd with Abermain racing to an 8-nil lead after a converted try and penalty.
The Magpies hit back through tries to Mitch McDonald and Billy Hughes to lead 10-8 at the break.
On resumption, a try to Scott Wratten and a second to Hughes saw the Magpies jump out to a 22-8 lead, but three tries to Abermain combined with the sin-binning of Boe Clarke saw the visitors take the win.
The Magpies have a bye this weekend for the Easter break and will play the Williamtown Jets at Hexham Oval in round four of the Newcastle Hunter Rugby League D grade competition on April 26. Kick-off is at 3pm.
