Gliding at Gloucester is on again with the annual visit of soaring pilots from around the State.
The Central Coast Soaring Club from Mangrove Mountain is staging its ridge soaring camp at Gloucester Aero Club from August 2 to 10 and is inviting visitors to the airfield to view the operation or take a local air experience flight.
The Gloucester ridge soaring event is a highlight in the gliding calendar.
It is traditionally held in winter when the westerlies blow from the Barringtons and Gloucester Tops across to the Mograni, creating a wave-like wind which gives lift to the gliders.
On a good day the gliders can soar for hours up and down the Mograni, fly across the Avon Valley and out towards the Gloucester Tops.
Heights above 10,000 feet have been attained.
The Central Coast club has been organising the event for more than 20 years and last year attracted the most gliders and pilots in years.
Air experience flights will be available in twin-seater gliders piloted by experienced instructors.
Visitors will be given an opportunity to handle the controls and experience what it is like to pilot a glider.
Subject to weather, visitor flying will be arranged daily from around 11am. Bookings are not necessary but inquiries can be made to the club president Wayne Page on 0412 844 074 or just turn up at the aero club.
