The 24-18 win means the Magpies are now three points clear of the fifth-placed Cobras with just two rounds of the regular season remaining.
A win against Abermain at Bert Gallagher Oval in round 17 would guarantee the Magpies a place in the semi finals.
The Gloucester side found the early going difficult against the Cobras, with the Clarence Town side also in contention for a finals spot.
Down two tries to nil, the Magpies rallied with four-pointers to Scott Wratten and Mick Shultz giving the visitors a surprise 12-8 lead at the break.
A try just after the restart to back rower Mitch McDonald extended the lead to 10 points, and Craig Murray added another after the Cobras had reduced the deficit to six.
The Magpies endured a nervous few moments before the final siren with a converted try to the home team making it 24-18 with minutes to play.
In the end accurate goal kicking by Wratten proved the difference with both teams scoring four tries.
The Magpies will enjoy a week off before the round 17 match against Abermain at Bert Gallagher Oval on August 9.
