Three women had to be freed by emergency service crews after the crash, with the Bucketts Way closed in both directions for some time.
The accident occurred about 400m east of Lantana Crossing Rd.
Police said a Holden Rodeo utility travelling east failed to negotiate a left-hand curve and crossed the separation lines where it crashed head-on into a Commodore sedan travelling west.
The Rodeo was occupied by an 18-year-old female driver from Tinonee who was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital with fractures to her face, wrist, ankle and pelvis.
A 27-year-old woman from Tinonee who was driving the Commodore was airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital Intensive Care Unit suffering serious chest and head injuries.
A 16-year-old Taree woman who was a passenger in the Commodore suffered serious leg, head and abdominal injuries in the crash.
The crash is being investigated by the Police Crash Investigation Unit.
