The old works were built in the 1970s as part of a program to arrest the severe river bank erosion that was occurring at the time.
As the river has slowly moved course, the old works have been exposed.
“Those of you who enjoy the walk along the river bank will share our frustration with the degraded bank that resulted from a tree collapse last year,” council’s general manager Danny Green said.
“Council has been actively pursuing this matter with relevant agencies and is hopeful that a grant application will be successful to be able to attend to the worst of this in the short term.”
