The water authority has recently undertaken preliminary investigations into an off-stream storage aimed at ensuring long term water supply security for the Gloucester and Barrington communities.
The long-term project is currently scheduled for 2024-25, but MidCoast Water opted to apply for funds from the State government under its new Water Security for Regions program.
The total cost of the project is estimated to be in the region of $15 million.
General manager Robert Loadsman said a large amount of external funding would be necessary to bring the project forward.
The project would improve drought security and delay the need for water restrictions in dry times.
The Gloucester water supply is currently fed directly from the Barrington River and is dependent on river flows.
- Meanwhile, MidCoast Water mascot Whizzy the water drop visited Gloucester Library on Monday to raise awareness about water-saving initiatives with young children.
As part of National Water Week celebrations, preschool aged children read a story about how to save water before a visit from the giant water drop.
