ICE: Methamphetamine use is on the rise in Roxby Downs.

Methamphetamine usage in Roxby Downs has increased according to a local doctor.

Dr Simon Lockwood said he is treating a number of addicts at the Roxby Downs Family Health Clinic.

"I'm seeing patients who use it [meth] regularly every week," he said.

"And the use of the drug has risen in the last 12 months.

"More than I have ever seen in the last 10 years."

Methamphetamine, also known as ice or crystal meth, is an addictive poison that first acts as a stimulant then systematically destroys the body.

Over time users can expect to suffer side effects such as major mood swings, delusional behaviour and extreme paranoia.

Roxby Downs Police Senior Sergeant Terry Boylan said recent drug raids in Roxby Downs and Andamooka resulted in a number of arrests, however, he encourages members of the community to come forward and help police with their inquiries.

"Police are aware there is a problem,'" he said

"We want to work with the community and use available resources to apprehend those that use or produce illicit drugs in our community."

Drug raids in Roxby Downs and Andamooka resulted in a 30-year-old man being arrested and charged with possession of a controlled drug for sale after an amount of methamphetamine and cannabis was found.

A 19-year-old from Roxby downs was also issued a drug diversion after he was reported for possessing a prohibited substance.

According to Uniting Communities, a non profit agency of the Uniting Church, the Police Drug Diversion Initiative (PDDI) program aims to divert people who are detected by the police for simple possession of illicit drugs to a health intervention, rather than processing them through the criminal justice system.
