Josh and Maitland’s Jack Lawrence travelled to Western Australia as part of the Glowalman junior rodeo championship’s exchange program.
The program is now in its 12th year and has seen 46 young campdrafters from both Western Australia and NSW travel to compete at either the Glowalman event or the Coolup and Boar Swamp campdrafts in the west.
Josh and Jack were met in Western Australia by Brett and Liza Edwards and were driven to the Edwards’ property near Gin Gin, one and half hours north of Perth.
The boys visited a feedlot and were kept busy mustering and drafting cattle.
The pair then travelled to Pinjarra to Leigh and Nickie McLarty’s property ahead of the Coolup Campdraft.
At Coolup the boys competed in the juvenile draft over two rounds.
In the first round Josh, riding Sedley Gibbs mare Dekoda Dynasty, finished with the equal top score of 89 points.
In round two Josh and Dekoda Dynasty top-scored with 90 points to win the draft.
Josh also won the cut-out competition with 23 points.
At the end of the Coolup program all winners are invited to compete in the Champion of Champions draft.
Dekoda Dynasty once again performed beautifully for Josh and their score of 89 points was enough to claim the overall title.
The following weekend both Josh and Jack travelled to Boar Swamp for that region’s annual draft. The Boar Swamp program included two juvenile drafts over two days.
Josh again came out on top on both days.
According to Leigh McLarty, Josh’s achievement of winning three from three juvenile drafts, two cut-outs and the Coolup Champion of Champions trophy has never been done before.
