Mayor John Rosenbaum will lead the 10-strong Gloucester contingent that will travel to the tiny town of Sheffield in Tasmania’s north for the awards.
Council and the Tidy Towns committee have spent the past several months preparing for the awards after Gloucester was named the overall winner of the NSW Tidy Towns awards last November.
Gloucester will be up against some stiff opposition with Westbury (Tasmania), Beechworth (Victoria), Titjikala (Northern Territory), Cooktown (Queensland), Meningie (South Australia) and Toodyay (Western Australia) among the contenders.
Videographer Gordon Dingwell has prepared a 16-minute video showcasing Gloucester while the team will also deliver a five-minute presentation on the Tucker Patch.
Poet Claire Reynolds has also penned a tribute to Gloucester, a recording of which will be played over a slideshow of pictures.
“We’ve had so much support from local organisations. The community has been right behind us the whole way,” Tidy Towns committee members Norma Fisher said.
For Tidy Towns coordinator Tania Parkinson making it to the nationals is achievement enough.
“Seeing how everyone has banded together to make this happen has been extremely uplifting,” she said.
“This is Phar Lap in a field of Phar Laps. We’ve won already. This is simply the icing on the cake.”
The national Tidy Towns awards will be held this Thursday and Friday, February 26 and 27 with the winners to be announced on Friday night.
Gloucester will host the NSW Tidy Towns awards on November 6 and 7.
