This appeal is the main source of funding for the many areas of Social and Welfare work undertaken by the Salvos and help one million disadvantaged Australians each year.
Collectors will be out and around the town and district on Sunday May 24.
Although there is not an established Salvation Army presence in Gloucester there are many services available to the community.
Captain Keith Atkinson, says a massive number of people end up falling on hard times and for many individuals and families, hard times may be just one pay cheque away.
Captain Atkinson says volunteers are urgently needed to lend a hand with the doorknock or simply as drivers for the young Gloucester High School students who are assisting.
Captain Atkinson adds, “We are truly thankful for the incredible generosity and support of the Australian community over 50 years of the Doorknock.”
This year’s national fundraising goal for the Red Shield doorknock is $9.5 million. In the 2014 Appeal, the Gloucester Community gave $3,500 to the Red Shield Appeal.
In a typical week The Salvation Army provides 100,000 meals, 2,000 beds for the homeless, distributes 8,000 food vouchers, helps 3,000 elderly people with aged care services, provide refuge to 500 victims of abuse and much more.
For assistance in accessing these services you can call The Salvation Army in Taree on 65512570.
