Seamus Burke registered to play rugby league for the Wingham Tigers – his first ever season of league, and a nerve-wracking yet exciting prospect.
While their season wasn’t one to see them through to the finals, Seamus was an integral team player who achieved remarkable success.
Playing second row, Seamus wasn’t one to shy away from making a break, tackling hard and scoring many tries.
The end of the season saw him awarded with the 2014 Best and Fairest Player at Presentation Night, along with the coveted award The Ryan Greenway Memorial Trophy for International Rookie of the Year – an outstanding way to finish his first season.
2015 was a new year and a new season full of challenges and excitement.
Try outs for football were at the top of the list.
After many trial games and gala days in Salamander Bay and Bellingen, the representative team made its first two cuts – Seamus made it.
Port Macquarie was the next stop for the Northern Districts Country Championships, where Group 3 had their most successful year – keeping all teams they played against from scoring against them – 54 nil, 44 nil, nil all and finally 38 nil.
Group 3 made history with these results.
Cessnock is the team’s next step next weekend for the Trophy Finals against Southern Districts Champions.
Everyone wishes Group 3 the best of luck.
It has been a fantastic start for Seamus in League.
Both his teams – Wingham Tigers and Group 3 – have been amazing.
All the managers, coaches and training staff involved on both sides have been extremely supportive and encouraging, not to mention all the boys Seamus plays with, who are brilliantly talented young men.
