ON Saturday the two semi finals of the pairs competition were played and both matches were tight affairs taking 3.5 hours and four hours to complete.

The first match between the Groves brothers, Mark and Phil and Bob Crittenden and Barry Wade was close until end 12 when, with the score at 10 – 8 to the Groves boys, they went on a four end winning streak and took nine shots to break the resolve of Barry and Bob.
Running to a 23 to 10 shot lead on end 20 the game was over andwas conceded before end 21 was played.
In match two the reining champions, Steve Brown and Gordon Pritchard played against Bob Charman and Tony Tersteeg.
Bob and Tony won the first seven ends going to a 13 0 shot lead.
Then Gordon and Steve got control of the mat and started shortening the ends and clawed their way back.
By end 18 they were 17 16 down and won the last three ends to sneak home by 22 shots to 17.
A very tight and adsorbing contest.
The final went ahead on Sunday at 9.30am and although expected to be a close affair the converse was the case.
From the first bowl the Groves brothers outplayed Gordon and Steve and with a high class display with Phil showing a fine temperament and control well backed up by Mark’s drawing abilities.
With the score at 25 shots to 6 with 5 ends still to play, Steve and Gordon conceded defeat and Mark and Phil took the Championship.
Thursdays social bowls saw 30 players in five matches of triples competition.
High scoring was the order of the day and one match was won on 16 points, two on 17 and the runners up with 19 points were Ken Baxter, Bob Crittenden and Mark Groves who beat Denis Buckton, Neville Holstein and Barry Wade by 28 shots to 12. Winners of first prize with 21 points were Luke Keen, Steve Howlett and Steve Higgins with their 33 to 15 shot win over, Ru Ritter, Jim Whittaker and Terry Higgins.
In a social match played on Saturday alongside the pairs semi finals, Nico Duynhoven, Peter Sansom and Peter Green had their bottoms kicked 40 shots to 18 by Vic Hebblewhite, Col Atkins and Terry Higgins in a fun and enjoyable encounter.
