Local doctors and the Mayo Private Hospital put their heads together to find ways to enhance various health care services for the Gloucester community.
Mayo successfully introduced new physiotherapy and chiropractic services in March.
In a short time appointments have been rapidly filling up.
Dr Michele Hogg from Gloucester MediCo is delighted that access to these highly trained therapists has increased the choice and reduced demands of travel for Gloucester residents. As well as the physio and chiropractic services, Mayo based orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Bruce White is also travelling to Gloucester to provide consultation services at the Centre.
Dr White works closely with the Mayo physio team to provide pre and post surgery rehabilitation for his patients.
Mayo CEO Peter Johnson said that it was a positive move for Gloucester residents.
“Wherever possible we want to provide access to the full pathway of care,” he said.
“It means patients needing an operation can do their pre hab (getting ready for the operation) and their rehabilitation in Gloucester.
“In the past they might have needed to spend a couple of weeks away from home throughout the whole process.
“Now, this means patients will only be away from home for a couple of days for the operation itself before returning home for rehab.”
Mayo introduced a specialist women’s health practitioner to the medical centre in May.
This practitioner provides assessment for a range of women’s health issues such as continence, pre and post natal conditions and musculo – skeletal problems.
Women’s health practitioner, Kirsten MacKinnon says that the primary focus is to assess and identify the issues.
“It is surprising how many things we can fix with relatively simple treatment,” she said.
Next month the Mayo Mental Health team is visiting the Gloucester GPs with a view to establishing enhancing local psychology support services.
