ON Sunday July 19 the minor singles championship between Bob Charman and Dickie Baker was played after being postponed earlier due to illness. This match was very close for two thirds of the way as both players took turns holding the lead. The turning point came after end 26 with the scores on 21 to 19 in Dickies favour. Bob went on to win eight ends of the next ten, to take the title by 31 shots to 23.
The Novice Singles championship rounds one and two also went ahead with Col Atkins advancing over Terry Davies who retired with an injury when the score was 22 all on end 21. Peter Bignall won by 31 to 11 over Rob Bowden, Vic Hebblewhite won 31 to 13 over Denis Buckton and Nico Duynhoven persevered to get past Terry Carson by 31 to 21. On Sunday Peter Bignall advanced to round three with a 31 to 22 shot win over Col Atkins.
The second semi final of the novice singles event on Thursday afternoon saw Nico Duynhoven taking on Vic Hebblewhite for a place in Sunday's final against Peter Bignall. Nico proved too strong for Vic from the start and although Vic came back later, Nico won his final spot by 31 shots to 21. Sunday's final was similar in style as Nico went out to a large lead early on and easily accounted for Peter Bignall who struggled with his game all day. The final score was 31 to 9.
Thursday's social competition was won by John West and Luis Urby who surpassed Barry Peacock and Kevin Everett by 36 shots to 12, amassing 21 points. Second prize went to Col Atkins and Terry Higgins who beat Neville Holstein and Bob Charman by 31 shots to 10 scoring 19 points. Saturday's bowls only saw one prize awarded as 16 players made four matches of pairs. The day's winners were Vic Hebblewhite and Bob Charman who won 33 to 19 shots over Nico Duynhoven and Peter Green.
Bowls will revert to the normal 1.30pm start time from this Thursday when play will return to the grass green for a week.
