So the water and sewer authority is running an online survey (closing at the end of this week) to find out more about what the community thinks about water and where it goes when we are done. The information gained through the survey will feed into the organisation’s review of their Our Water, Our Future strategy, a 30 year rolling plan for generations to come.

The survey has three main themes – how to provide water in the future, water restrictions and how they should be used and the sustainable management of recycled water.

“There are a number of options open to us, from increasing the use of recycled water on farmland and sporting field irrigation to more sophisticated areas such as using highly treated recycled water to recharge rivers, aquifers and dams from where the drinking water supply is drawn,” acting general manager Darryl Hancock said.

Mr Hancock explained MidCoast Water already has nine recycled water schemes which treat water so it can be reused as irrigation for places like farms golf courses and park, but two thirds of the water is still not being reused.

“There are a few ideas on the table and we would like to get as much comment from the community as possible so we can incorporate our community’s wishes into our future plans.”

Mr Hancock added water restrictions are also canvassed in the survey. 

“Does our community expect stronger water restrictions more often, or do they think they should be the last resort?”

The water authority hopes the community will become part of their conversation by taking part in the final days of the survey.
