Resilience. It’s the ‘in’ word for education but applies to children and adults alike. Heading to Gloucester in September is Tony Purkiss, a strong contender for the face of resilience. Emerging from eleven Sydney to Hobart yacht races which included two near death experiences, surviving a plane crash and a heart attack and becoming blind 10 years ago after an encounter with a suicide bomber in Bali, Tony has not only lived to tell the tales but has learned the valuable lesson of how to stay positive in the face of adversity.
It is a lesson he hopes to share with Gloucester on September 24. Now a motivational speaker, Tony’s journey of self discovery has enabled him to live life to the fullest with a ‘vision’ for an active, exciting and positive future. Continuing full steam ahead, his strength, love for family, friends and community have empowered him to overcome the challenges thrown his way. Assisted by technology he not only now sails but flies, has learnt to touch-type in a crash course, completed his Certificate 4 and Diploma in Business – Frontline Management, and gained skills in using adaptive technology. Alongside his motivational talks Tony has become a facilitator with TAFE NSW and uses his indomitable spirit to present public talks with great effect to both students and adults alike.
His power to overcome a situation rather than let it overcome him makes Tony Purkiss’ audiences sit up and pay attention. So on the invitation of Gloucester’s Prostate Support Group during Blue September, residents of all ages across Gloucester are being asked to do just that. Please, sit up and pay attention, because Tony Purkiss is coming to Gloucester’s Country Club on September 24 to share a personal lesson on strength.
