Late afternoon on Sunday September 6 Charlie and Maria Allen were on their way back to Armidale after visiting their newborn grandson in Newcastle when ‘a temporary lapse in concentration’ caused the car to suddenly leave the road. With Charlie having “a bit of a snooze”, Maria was in the driver’s seat, and both agree they were incredibly lucky to have not sustained more serious injuries.
“I jolted my back and had to be taken by ambulance to the Gloucester Hospital and stayed overnight. My wife, Maria, ended up with a broken foot. So all in all we were extremely lucky,” Charlie said.
With the car written off after it glanced off a tree and flattened a section of fence, Charlie said he and Maria were overwhelmed with the support of the locals who came to their aid and the ambulance officers who looked after them.
“The staff at Gloucester Hospital were also very friendly and supportive,” Charlie said.
Her foot in plaster, family members from Krambach drove both Maria and Charlie to Walcha the next day where they were picked up by a friend.
