After six years of attempts, Gloucester’s Riko Fitzgerald’s perseverance has paid off on the physical culture dance floor with guaranteed spot competing at the national finals at Homebush Olympic Park in November.

Selected on previous occasions as a zone finalist, the ‘placegetters’ medal eluded Riko until the recent zone round at Raymond Terrace with the Taree Great Lakes Physical Culture Club. Riko came away with a third place in the 13 years section, which is enough to send her to the National Junior finals.
“Riko is a remarkable young woman. She always does her best and through great effort and dedication she has produced beautiful Physie and has, at last, made it through to Nationals,” Gloucester resident and physie teacher Lyn Creek said.
Of the 33 girls representing the club at Junior Zone, six other young girls from the club have qualified to compete in Sydney as zone finalists in the National Repechage Finals. The Repechage round gives the students a second chance to get to ‘nationals’ by competing against other zone finalists from across the country. Zone finalists are six-year-old Sienna Jenkins from the club’s Stroud classes; three of the club’s 8-year-olds include Gloucester’s Kayla Blanch, Taree’s Jess Foley and Stroud’s Felicity Holstein; Gloucester’s Rachael Smith; and in the 10 years section Josie Fitzgerald will follow in her big sister’s former footsteps, getting through to the next round.
