It takes approximately 160 hours to crochet a blanket to give to Wrap With Love. Local volunteers knit or crotchet squares using 8 ply wool and 28 of these squares are then joined together to make one wrap. This year local wrap artists have made 60 blankets to help those in need.

Wrap with Love began in 1992 to help as many people in the world suffering from extreme cold as possible. In the past 20 years around 25,000 Australian volunteers have sent more than 323,000 wraps to be gifted to people in over 75 countries, including here. Eleven wraps were given to victims of the flood in Stroud and Dungog earlier this year. The wraps are given to those who need them and there are nearly always some on hand to help locals if needed.
Since 2006 local volunteers have made 489 wraps. These have been delivered to the Hunter regional coordinator thanks to the generosity of our local courier Denell Transport (and previously De Witte Transport). Without their support I’m not sure what I would have done to get them down there.
Over twenty non-denominational and non-political aid agencies collect wraps from a warehouse in Alexandria, NSW, to distribute them to those in greatest need. We rely on an Australia-wide network of caring volunteers to knit, transport and assemble wraps.
The Hunter division also support the ‘Our backyard – car to home project,’ which provides designated private car spaces for people sleeping in their cars. Our Backyard offers access to bathroom and kitchen facilities in the aim of making life a little easier. It is a place to contact and start the journey towards ending their homelessness. Other local groups include Desity Haven which works to see broken lives healed and transformed.
I had been a wrap artist for many years... It is such a simple thing to do and makes such a positive difference to someone’s life. Each wrap is the same thickness and same size. I coined the term ‘wrap artist’ as I think that everyone who makes these blankets and squares is a true artist.
Donations of 8ply wool are always needed – either wool or acrylic. If people don’t want to make an entire wrap or blanket then squares are welcomed.
