DON 'Bandy' Adams, the most successful captain-coach in Gloucester Rugby League Club's history, is expected to be one of the guests at a Men of League function to be held at the Avon Valley Inn on Friday.

Adams steered the Magpies to four successive premiership in the then Group 18/3 competition between 1963 and 1966. The competition was known as Group 18 until 1966 when boundary change saw Camden Haven, Wauchope and Port Macquarie join to form Group Three.
Prior to leading the Magpies in this outstanding period for the club, Adams played several matches for Australia after staring for the Maitland Pickers and NSW Country.
Former internationals Harry Wells, Dennis Tutty and John Elford will be among other guests along with referee Mick Stone, who controlled State of Origin and grand finals during a long career. Ex-players from Wingham, Taree, Wauchope and Kempsey also are extended to attend. A large contingent from Wingham will catch the train to the function. Gloucester and Wingham had a fierce rivalry before and during Adams's time at Gloucester. From 1957 to 1966 the clubs dominated the competition, winning 10 premierships between them. Of those 10 the Magpies won eight. In that time the Magpies and Tigers met in the grand final on five occasions.
Friday's function will be organised by the Mid North Coast branch of the Men of League.
The Men of League Foundation was established in 2002 to assist rugby league players, coaches, referees, officials and administrators from all levels of the game and members of their families who have fallen on hard times.
