Building a labyrinth is not a common occurrence, but after the driveway it was one of the first things that Karen Quant did after moving to Bucca Wauka from Sydney four years ago.

The Feng Shui consultant and interior designer attributes the labyrinth, shaped in a set pattern of seven paths, to a Feng Shui principle of ‘sacred geometry’. Feng shui itself is an ancient Chinese artform developed thousands of years ago, and relates to ‘balancing’ the energies of a location to ensure the health of those inhabiting it.
“When I was 22 years old I was seriously ill, and it made me reconsider who I was and what was important in my life,” Karen, then working in the corporate sector, said.
Recovering, she rebuilt her life around holistic principles and now certifies feng shui practitioners as well as consults. Drawing on her skills she is also helping women reconnect with who they are and uses the labyrinth as one way to facilitate this.
“I think technology has made many of us lose our sense of nature and natural rhythm,” she said.
“But connecting with nature makes everything clearer.’
Unlike a maze, the labyrinth does not set out to confuse but is instead about finding yourself.
“There’s only one way in, and one way out,” she said.
The labyrinth is a metaphor for life, with its paths taking the walker in unexpected directions. Going in - focus on something in your life which might need addressing. Coming out - reflect on what you got out of it.
“Like life, you don’t know what’s going to happen,” Karen said, referring to the labyrinth as a sacred healing place.
To experience it for yourself, Karen is opening up her labyrinth to the public for a free open day on Sunday April 17, from 11am to 2pm. Alongside other events, this will be followed on May 7 which is World Peace Day. For the cost of a $20 donation towards the Firefly Rural Fire Service brigade's new radios, the public are invited to walk the labyrinth as ‘one’ with the rest of the world at 1pm.
