In front of a good home crowd at Berties Oval, the Magpies went into the game confident with the return of center Jason Boorer and prop Dain Lay, playing his first game for the club in 15 years.
The Hornets opened the scoring to lead 6-0 before backrower Mitch Turnbull made a break, down the left hand side of the field before passing to young rookie James Yates who scored under the post. Scott Wratten converted to tie it up at 6 all.
Gloucester then began to drop way too much ball and concede penalties late in the tackle count. Hinton took advantage of these mistakes to break away to a 16-6 lead before right on half time. Fullback Billy Hughes jumped on a kick from five eight Riley Collins to score and go in at halftime down 16-10.
Hinton scored not long after half time after another Magpies error before James Yates scored out wide again after a nice lead up by forwards Kieran Burley and Matt Wise.
Billy Hughes then scored from a scrum win after a nice ball from Hooker Coen Durbridge, but both conversions were missed as Magpie goal kicker Scott Wratten left the field with an ankle injury.
After more errors and alop sided penalty count Hinton then scored a converted try to close out the game 26-18.
The Magpies will look to regroup next week as they take on the Hexam Jets at Hexam Oval Saturday 2pm.
Points for the Day: 3points Matt Wise; 2points Billy Hughes; 1 point Simon Hitchcock and Coen Durbridge. Players’ player Billy Hughes.
