At last count, from Friday to Sunday night local Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews worked on at least 20 incidences of fires.
“We normally might expect around four or five call-outs over a weekend at this time of year,” RFS superintendent Jim Blackmore said.
“It’s that time of year that starts getting busier, when conditions are drier and everyone is getting their burns done.”
“After frosts, surface fuels are totally cured. Fire can escape it quite quickly.”
While the weekend’s fires across the region were able to be contained with only a few going on for a number of hours, he reminded those planning burn-offs to notify their neighbours and the RFS at least 24 hours in advance and to keep a close eye on weather conditions through the Bureau of Meteorology.
“And if you’re going to light a fire, make sure you have water and containment lines around it.”
He also reminded residents to have a bushfire survival plan.
