There is something incredibly quirky about a DeLorean.
Many people are familiar with the little silver sports car with its gull-wing doors and brushed stainless steel body as the time machine from the Back to the Future movies.
But not many locals have seen one in real life.
Fortunately for north coast residents all that is changing since Wingham’s Gary Cox did a “deal on the spot” last June for a 1981 DeLorean DMC-12.
“It is such a rare and unusual car,” he admits.
“I’ve never been able to take it anywhere without people wanting to take photos or kids wanting to jump in for a ride.”
However Gary is resisting pressure to turn the car into a Back to the Future tribute.
“I have no desire to have a flux capacitor,” he laughs.

He plans instead to keep the car as original as possible and has been gradually doing some basic restoration work including brakes, steering and electrical.
The car is fully registered and Gary uses it every couple of weeks.
Made in Northern Ireland the DeLorean was a project that never fully reached its potential with parts being produced for 35,000 vehicles back in the early 80s.
Less than 9000 were produced before John DeLorean's DeLorean Motor Company went into liquidation and production ceased in 1983.
There is some talk of a number of new DMC-12s being produced later this year and early next year using the surplus stock of parts.
Gary’s DeLorean shares a garage with his other quirky car - a 2011 Morgan 4/4 - which we will feature next month.
