In Back Roads, Heather Ewart explodes outdated cliches about rural Australians

If you believe the tourism ads, the most interesting and inherently "Aussie" parts of Australia comprise pristine, scenic beaches or the headline acts of the outback: the gorges, the rock, the desert sunsets. But in between there and suburbia are thousands of regional towns and tiny communities that many of us may never hear about, much less visit. Towns with one pub, one shop, maybe a sports ground – but, inevitably, a thousand different stories. And, mawkish thought it might seem, a certain resilience and "can-do" attitude often lacking in bigger cities.
