It was the first time the six-year-old Krambach Public School student had entered the competition ring by herself and she took out second place; not once but twice; beating her mum in the process.
During the recent school holidays, Isabel and her mother Bridget Hawkins went to the Penrith Summer Agricultural Breed and Hack Show (January 8); an event for adults and children of all ages.
Bridget has been competing all her life and has been taking Isabel along since she was two.
Isabel has won competitions before, holding a state title when she was three and a national title when she was five; even beating her mother once before.
In the past, Bridget has helped Isabel lead the horse during the competition, but this time Isabel bet her mother she could do it on her own; with Bridget leading her own horse, so she could still be there is Isabel needed her.
Isabel said she usually takes two horses with her for competition, but in this case she took her pony named Kyabra Park Rhett Butler into the ring.
“My horse is the same age as me,” Isabel giggled.
She won second place in both the Best Presented Led Pinto and the Best Marked Led Pinto, beating her mother both.
“If anyone’s going to beat me, I’m glad it her,” Bridget said.
Bridget explained how these events judge the horse and the handler by the way the present themselves around the ring.
Isabel has a really cute outfit.
“She looked absolutely gorgeous,” Bridget said.
