He grew up in a small town in Myanmar and feels at home in a regional community.
“Both my parents are farmers,” he said.
“Both have lectured at the agricultural university in Myanmar.”
He has been in Australia for four years, spending time working in Perth, Sydney and Hamilton, Victoria, before coming to Gloucester.
He said Hamilton is a similar size to Gloucester, with around 5000 people in the town.
Although he thinks it’s “a bit bigger. They have a Macca’s and a KFC,” he laughs.
He has come to Gloucester because this country practice provides more options to learn a greater range of medical techniques, with the doctors working in both the medical centre and the hospital.
“I’ve always wanted to do regional training,” he said.
He came to Australia after finishing his degree, knowing that he would have more career opportunities here. He didn’t know anything about Australia and had never been here before he made the move. All of his family is back in Myanmar, except for his sister, who works as a nurse in Sydney.
His pastimes include soccer. He’s a big soccer fan, both playing and watching.
“It's a big sport back home,” he smiled.
Dr Thant played for both his university team and for his state.
