Upgrade works to a section of Gloucester Tops Road located around 18 kilometres down from Silverthorn Stock Horse Stud will resume on Monday, March 27.
Works include laying a new pavement to replace the existing gravel road, sealing the 1.4km stretch, installation of guideposts and an improved drainage system. The outcome will be a smoother, safer route for the thousands of tourists that visit the popular Barrington Tops area all year round, and is timed for delivery before the busy snow season.
MidCoast Council works engineer, Claire Schultz explains, “sealed roads are not only preferable for motorists, they’re also far more cost-effective to maintain. It means we avoid the on-going expense of gravel patching which is needed when surface materials are displaced over time”.
The Gloucester Tops area was last year named on The Urban List’s top five hiking areas near Sydney, offering spectacular scenery and access to nature at its best.
The works were scheduled to be undertaken over four weeks commencing in mid-February, however due to wet weather the final trim and sealing works have been delayed.
Through-traffic will be maintained in both directions, however motorists are asked to observe reduced speed limits, roadside signage and directions from road crews at all times, and to travel with care through the area.
This project is funded by the Australian Government Roads to Recovery Program through the former Gloucester Shire Council’s road improvement program, and is part of MidCoast Council’s commitment to improving infrastructure throughout the region.
