THE maximum field of 72 will hit off in the last Krambach Golf Club open day on Sunday.
“We can’t get any more on,’’ assistant secretary Jim Land said.
“We’re full.’’
Mr Land said the club had tried to go around with more players in the past.
“But it took six hours to finish and the golfers didn’t like that. So 72 is the limit.’’
The club will end nearly 65 years of golf at the end of June when the privately owned course closes. Mr Land said members were ‘a bit sad’ that this would be the last open day.
“But the Patterson family (owners of the course) have given this community 65 years of golf and we’re grateful to them. They’ve never even charged us rent –not even a peppercorn.’’
Mr Land added that with the age of most members the club would have folded by natural attrition ‘within five or six years.’
“We don’t have any juniors coming through,’’ he said.
He said there has been great support for Sunday from smaller golf clubs in the area – particularly Wingham.
“We don’t get many from the bigger clubs like Taree or Forster,’’ he said.
He added that one golfer who played his first open day at Krambach in 1966 as a junior would be in Sunday’s field.
Krambach was part of an open day championship for clubs with nine hole courses Karuah, Bulahdelah and Harrington Waters.
This was instigated by the Karuah club about four years ago.
"There’s nine or 10 clubs involved,’’ Mr Land said.
“So we get golfers from those clubs.’’
The club’s final day of golf will be Sunday June 25.
