An audit of Gloucester public place waste bins in June 2016 found a third of waste in litter bins was recyclable. It is expected that this figure is higher in summer when more cold drinks are being consumed.
MidCoast Council’s waste health and regulatory services manager John Cavanagh said the bins are funded by a grant from the NSW Environmental Protection Authority's Better Waste and Recycling Fund and will be for the benefit of the community.
"Dual litter and recycling bin enclosures will be installed in the town centre, Billabong Park and parts of Gloucester District Park, and dual wheelie bin stands will be installed in other parks and reserves this month,” he said.
"If the Gloucester community embraces the public sorting of these recyclables, there will be valuable gains for the community. Reducing our costs in waste disposal is good news for ratepayers and residents."
