The first game was always going to be a close call between Tuncurry Black (ranked fourth) and Wingham Wanderers (fifth). Tuncurry managed two quick goals in succession early in the game, while Wingham were awarded two free kicks near the box, only converting one. It was an action packed game, with a huge crowd and the Drifta 14's team also cheering from the sideline watching intently as the goals kept coming, creating a fantastic atmosphere. Final score Tuncurry 5, Wingham Wanderers 3. Well done to both teams.
Determined to gain a spot in the finals next week, Drifta 14's (ranked third) took to the field next against Cundletown Jets (sixth). Early shots by Aiden, Kelly and Zeke kept the Jets defensive line busy, while Joseph's determination was rewarded with two quick goals early on. The Jets managed to make a few quick breakaways, though Tristyn and Will shut them down early, while Isaac came out and cleared the ball when needed.
A hard tackle by Hayden made for a nervous moment awarding the Jets with a free kick near the box, though they were unable to score from it, sending the ball wide. Jack took on a runaway, corralling him and sending the ball away, while Josh saved some great attempts whilst in goals for the second half.
Our third goal was a team effort with the ball hitting the top bar, rebounding to the ground, back to our forwards, hitting the keeper, though Beau seized the opportunity and slotted it away into the net. Lane, Kayden and Harrison worked well together, while Aiden zigzagged his way through the Jets defence with some fancy footwork, slotting in our final goal for the day, bringing the final score to 4-0. Congratulations to both teams on their great sportsmanship and skills throughout the day, special mention to the Jets talented keeper who saved some brilliant goals.
Thank you to all who supported the day and to Ossie Bellamy (Zone Referee Coordinator from Football MidNorth Coast) for refereeing and providing the linesman.
