Becoming a radio announcer was a dream of Gloucester’s Daniel Gilfillan since he was a young boy.

One day back in 2010, he was visiting the Bucketts Radio station in the Majestic Arcade on Church Street in Gloucester when he was asked if he wanted to be on the radio.

He went home and asked his mother if he could do it and she said yes.

He said he had to make sure that he understood the rules of what he can say and what he can’t say on the air before he got started.

Once he knew that, he was good to go.

Since then he has been running two to three shows a week.

The first is ‘Daniel’s Drive Home Country Show’ on Monday afternoons from 5pm until 5.30pm.

After that show finishes, he is joined by his nan, Joyce Johnson from 5.30pm until 6.30pm, for ‘Joyce’s Country Jukebox’. “She plays a lot of good songs,” Daniel said about his nan.

But Daniel isn’t just all about country music, he also hosts a show later in the week, on Thursdays from 1pm until 2pm, called ‘Daniel’s Feel Good Oldies’, where he plays music from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s.

In the past, he had a classic rock spot on Saturday mornings from 11am until noon, which he’s hoping to get back up and running.

“I need to talk to the boss about it,” he said.

What Daniel likes about being on the radio is being able to tell the community about what is coming up in the Gloucester area.

“It’s a good radio station,” he said.

Daniel is part of a group of volunteers who host either their own shows or co-host a spot using music from a wide selection held in the radio stations digital library.

Bucketts Radio 104.1FM run is by volunteers and is funded by sponsorship advertising from mainly local businesses, as well as, memberships and donations.

The station is always looking for volunteers in the community to come and help out.

There a lots of spots available for anyone in the community who wants to try their hand a being a disc jockey.
