On Saturday, September 23 the Drifta team were up against this season’s undefeated Northern FMNC Grand Final Winners, the Wauchope Axemen 14's.
The Zone Championships was a first for FMNC, bringing the grand final winners from the northern and southern leagues to play against each other in teams ranging from 12 years up to 18. The weekend was capped off by a FMNC Premier League Men's grand final game on Saturday night.
The Drifta boys played their game at 1:30pm, and with the unusually hot weather on the day, junior games were stopped 15 minutes into the match for a drinks break.
With the majority of the Drifta team competing in the Gloucester High School Tri Challenge just the day before, and some team members competing in the whole race as individual competitors, the boys braved the heat and battled on with the game, despite some sore, lethargic legs.
Although nerves showed among the Drifta team, playing in front of a large crowd in a stadium setting, they played their hearts out for the entirety of the game, despite going down to the Wauchope Axemen 5-0 at the full time whistle.
Drifta have had another fantastic season this year having it only be their second year playing as a team. This year in their season of 15 games, they won 10 of them, lost three, and had two byes.
They scored a total of 80 goals (the second highest in their competition), conceded only 12 (the second least for their competition), and were ranked third for the 2017 season.
The team are keen to have another run at the grand final title again next year, and may have some spots vacant, and with the high possibility of forming a younger team of 12 or 13 year olds, (boys and girls), so if you're interested contact Geoff on 0409 903 425.
Training and tryouts will be held in February 2018, so keep an eye out on Gloucester Scorpions Soccer Club Facebook page for more details closer to the time.
Gloucester Soccer Club will be again running a Summer 6's competition (six on a team) for junior and senior players starting with registration and friendly games on Wednesday, October 11 at Number One Oval from 6pm. For more info, check out our Facebook page, details coming shortly.
