Around one hundred concerned community members from Gloucester, Forster and Taree came together at Billabong Park, Gloucester to create a massive human sign along with a ‘Stop Rocky Hill’ message as well.
Gloucester resident, Steve Robinson said it was an opportunity for people to hear reasons why the community needs to take an interest in the proposed Adani coal mine in Queensland.
One of the speakers on the day, Gloucester’s Knitting Nannas, Carol Bennett explained why the sign was created
“Adani can’t find a bank to back the project, so it’s depending on a $1 billion loan from the Northern Australia Infrastructure Fund,” she said.
“That’s our taxpayers’ money. The Federal and Queensland Governments can veto NAIF spending, and we’re here to send them a message saying that the majority of Australian’s do not support this mine.”
Signatures opposing the loan gathered at the event are to be presented to Federal Member for Lyne, Dr David Gillespie MP at his Taree office on Friday, October 27 at 11am where there is a planned sit-in/knit in.
A spokesperson for StopAdani Mid North Coast said that Dr Gillespie who was invited to the event, but as he was unable to attend, the group has decided to bring the signatures to his office.
