In a hard fought contest both sides had to endure long periods defending their line as penalties came in multiples against one side then the other. After defending for two sets and a line drop out, the Gloucester Magpies were first to score when captain Riley Collins stripped the ball for Kurt Gudgeon to score after a sustained attack.
The second try came after the Magpies got a free ride off the back of two penalties with Dave Morgan scoring under the posts. Paterson were next to score when the five-eighth kicked into goal for their centre to close the gap 10-6.
After a tremendous run by Scott Wratten and plenty of defence, he set up his own try down the left side after being tackled then initiating a passing interchange with winger Jonah Mason. Paterson hit back with a try down their left wing when Gloucester squandered a penalty chance. Another penalty on half time was converted by the Magpies to lead 16-12.
Magpies started the second half strongly only to have what appeared to be two tries disallowed. Paterson hit the lead 18-16 when they made a break 80 metres out on their right wing and outpaced the defence.
The Magpies hit back with sustained no frills attack. A frustrated Paterson defence continually infringed until their second rower was given 10 minutes in the sin bin. Gloucester kept the pressure on and Lachlan Picton put them back in front with a try to lead 20-18. The late penalty by Paterson gutted the Magpies.
Simple mistakes and discipline apses will no doubt be in the minds of players as they reflect on the one that got away. Once again Gudgeon led the way with an outstanding game in defence and an ever ready willingness to take the ball up. Collins absorbed plenty of punishment and lead by example while maintaining plenty of talk on field. A big rap for young Brodie O’Brien, who took on the kicking duties as well as filling in for tiring forwards in the second half from full back.
