MidCoast Water has begun planning for an off stream storage facility to address rare extreme low flow events in the Barrington River.
While the plan is still at concept stage, MidCoast Water says the option it is currently looking at is a small storage dam where water would be pumped from the river in times of reasonable flow to provide a backup supply.
“It wouldn’t dam the river. The off-stream storage project will take some time to develop and will require significant community and agency consultation,” MidCoast Water general manager Robert Loadsman said.
“A location has not yet been determined and there will be a lengthy development process. It could be 10 years plus for that phase.”
