Dr Safwat Khalid and wife Jazilo officially became Australian citizens at a ceremony presided over by mayor John Rosenbaum last Wednesday.
Dr Khalid, his wife and son Ibrahim, 6, migrated to Australia from Pakistan in 2008.
Initially they lived in South Australia, but the couple moved to Gloucester two years ago so Dr Khalid could take up a job at the local medical centre.
Dr Khalid said the family had always intended to become citizens.
“There are so many freedoms and liberties that come with citizenship; so many rights you can enjoy,” he said.
The family said they hoped to make their home in Gloucester long term.
