The bizarre scenario began on Friday afternoon when a plumber was driving along Pitt Street in Haymarket and came to an intersection.
While the 46-year-old was stopped at an intersection, a man opened the passenger door and climbed in, police said.
He then allegedly attacked the driver, punching him in the face several times before demanding he was driven to Wagga.
But onlookers and the driver, who suffered facial injuries, two broken teeth and bruising, weren’t having a bar of it.
According to police, a number of witnesses intervened and the driver managed to get out of the ute.
He then remotely locked the vehicle, trapping his alleged attacker and would-be carjacker inside.
Passing police officers were waved down and they tried to arrest the 39-year-old Ashmont man.
A scuffle ensued, with an officer resorting to using capsicum spray after the man allegedly punched another officer in the face.
He was taken to Sydney’s Day Street police station and charged with aggravated assault with intent to take/drive vehicle, inflict actual bodily harm, assaulting police and resisting police.
He is set to appear in Parramatta Bail Court later on Saturday.
