With 110 registered bidders and more than 200 people in attendance the omens were good well before auctioneer Paul Dooley called ‘sale-o’.
Mr Tickle had been selling his bulls privately for nearly 30 years having stuck with Angus even when the breed was not the flavour of the month. “I decided to hold an on-property sale to enable all our buyers to have an equal opportunity to select their choice of sire from the complete catalogue,” said Mr Tickle.
“And it worked a treat, a real celebration, as the sale’s date in August coincided with our family arriving in the district 160 years ago.”
The sale that grossed $500,000 for 53 bulls was held in the newly completed selling complex.
Top price on the day was $20,000 paid for lot 14 Sugarloaf Reality L154 a 962kg, 24-month-old son of influential NZ Angus sire, Matauri Reality 839 from Sugarloaf Burnette F33. The buyers were John and Pam Farragher, Seaham.
His full flush brother, lot 13 Sugarloaf Reality L153, fetched the second top price of the sale, $16,000, and was bought by Grant Ford who owns Ford Cattle Company- a large-scale beef operation at Tea Gardens on land once owned by AMP.
Sugarloaf Reality L153, who is one day older than his brother and weighed in lighter at 882kg, had EBVs of +46, +85 and +109 for 200-, 400- and 600-day weight.
A Basin Payweight 107S son lot 3 Sugarloaf Payweight L26 sold for $10,000 to Victoria Park also at Tea Gardens. And other Payweight son Sugarloaf Payweight L17 made $10,000 to Graham Chevalier, Gresford.
One of the volume buyers was Goonoo Goonoo Station near Tamworth owned Tony Haggarty, who bought four bulls to a top of $10,000 to average $8,750.
Ten cows and calves sold to $3100 to average $2960 and yearling heifers averaged $1400. Selling agents were Bowe and Lidbury, Maitland and Gloucester, and Dillon and Sons, Dungog.
