Gloucester’s green thumb, Wayne Groves has unknowingly created a new variety of tomatoes that is thriving in this winter climate.
During the summer he planted two varieties: Pink Queens and Black Russians in his garden in town.
After the plants has withered away, he removed them from the garden, as you do, at the end of the season.
Next thing he knows, the two varieties have cross pollinated and created a new tomato that is keeping him and his family feed this winter.
He said he has picked around 30 tomatoes so far and more are on the vine, still growing.
“The biggest was over half a kilo; 570 grams,” he said.
He reckons they tastes pretty good as well, he laughed when asked.
They have been eating them, both raw and cooked.
Fried green tomatoes anyone?
