With one year rained off, makes this year the 40th time the celebration bowls event has been held. Now arranged by the GBC but subsidised by Col and Vic Hebblewhite, the event attracts players from local and far bowls clubs.
This year saw 72 bowlers take part from as far away as Cronulla and as local as Wingham in 18 teams of fours. Three matches were played by all teams, the first two of 12 ends and the third of 15 ends.
In the wrap up, no teams managed three wins on the day and so all those 10 teams who finished on two wins took part in an 8 bowls yard stick playoff over two ends.
Last year’s winners from Soldiers Point Club took out second place with 8 bowls within the yardstick but in first place were GBC fours champions led by John Andrews who managed 10 bowls from 16 within the target area.
Col presented the first place holders the shield, medallions and a meat tray each. It was a great day for all, especially for those Hebblewhite men who do not normally play bowls but look forward to getting together as a family for this event.
