Year nine mathematics students joined CalCo Surveyors, Phil Bowden and Frank Compton on Thursday, November 2, as they collected data and soil from different sites around Gloucester.
Students started with a couple locations in Craven before returning to town for a collection at Memorial Park.
GHS teacher, Tony Kingston said it was a good opportunity for the students to see how math works in the “real world”.
Students learned how coordinates are collected for surveying and were able to get a little bit of hands on experience in using the equipment.
They got to see how angles and measurements are important for work outside the classroom.
Phil said CalCo have volunteered to help with the soil collection and survey co-ordination for three sites in total, including Copeland.
The Anzac Memorial has a plaque for every town, suburb and locality around NSW that soldiers enlisted from for the First World War. The soil samples collected will be displayed alongside the place name.
Close to 1700 plaques will be displayed around the walls of the Hall of Service.
