Around 10 budding artist took advantage of the knowledge of an experience artist, with some travelling from as far as Kendall in order to get the chance to learn from Jo. Several Gloucester residents and well-known artists also took part, including Gloucester Gallery director Rachel Saunders.
Each workshop had a local model, with Adele Compton posing for the life drawing workshop which covers the traditional form of sketching in the nude and Peter Moon posing for the portraiture workshop which saw him changing position every two minutes.
Jo said she really enjoys teaching people the joy of art and sharing her passion with them.
“I’m not teaching people how to draw,” she said.
“I’m teaching them how to see. I teach the broader picture.”
Anne Junkkarinen from Moorland came to Gloucester for the very first time, just to do the portraiture workshop with Jo. She has been taking life drawing classes with Jo in Wingham. Anne started the classes after seeing Jo sketch people at the Manning Regional Art Gallery while Jo was the artist-in-residence in August 2016. Anne was so inspired, she decided to give it a go herself.
The gallery’s next exhibition, Kathleen Soper’s “A Familiar Place” opens on Thursday, December 7 and is open until January 1, 2018. Kathleen is holding free “Wander in the Weekend” workshops on Saturdays during the exhibition for all ages to come into the gallery and have a play with art.
