Gloucester High School held a fundraiser for breast cancer research on Wednesday, December 6 which saw six students pluck up the courage to shave their locks.
William Brown, Harry Clarke, Brody Dougherty, Rhys Cox, Lincoln Cox, Kieran Schneider and Owen Bithrey agreed to go under the razor in front of the entire school during fifth period.
They said it was an important event for them to organised as a few students in year 12 have had cancer affect family members.
Harry, who had been growing his hair for the past 12 months, said the connection to the cause was one reason for holding the head shaving as their first fundraiser as the incoming year 12s.
“We also wanted to do it now, so we can grow our hair back in time for the formal next year,” he laughed.
The students invited the members of the Gloucester Breast Cancer support group to come along and enjoy the event, and organised for Gloucester hairdresser, Nikki Durbidge to perform the procedure.
The first student to brave the chair was Harry, saying goodbye to his long blonde hair, bravely and without tears.
Others follows swiftly, as there was much less hair to be taken.
GHS teacher, Judy Ingram got caught up in the excitement and offered her head up for shaving, encouraging her fellow teachers to cough up some more cash for the cause.
Then it was time for the grand finale.
Brody, who has had long hair for the past four years, made his way to the chair.
Nikki was presented with a large pair of scissors and in a matter of moments, Brody’s braid was snipped.
The crowd cheered as they watched all the hair fall to the floor, and Brody said goodbye to lovely long locks.
The event raised over $2,500.
