Boomerang Bags Gloucester have made around 1200 bags with the help of around 15 volunteers and the generous donations of material and equipment from various donors, as well as funds from MidCoast Council.
The bags are hand sewn from donated fabric and have been placed in numerous shops around town for people to use instead of plastic.
Originally, the concept of the bags was for people to borrow if they had forgotten their own reusable bags or didn’t have one and for it to be returned for someone else to use. The idea has now evolved into offering the bags for people to take and continue to use for their ongoing shopping needs.
The hope is that people will decide to use the fabric bags instead of plastic.
Community members can also opt to donate funds to the cause in exchange for a bag at either the Gloucester Visitors Information Centre on Derision Street or the Gloucester Bookshop on Church Street.
Thanks to the handiwork of the Gloucester Men’s Shed, Gloucester Boomerang Bags will now be on display and available for customers at Gloucester IGA.
The men made a stand which will display the bags for customers to see and hold a quantity of bags for people to use.
